Everyone’s River - Everyone’s Art

Youth Art Contest

August 15 – 29, 2008

Pendleton Center for the Arts

Project Vision

· To increase awareness of the aesthetic and ecological value of the Umatilla River within the town of Pendleton.

· To provide local youth an opportunity to express this awareness through production of art both individually and in classes designed to combine art and science instruction.

· To produce a local art show of these works.

· To publish an attractive book featuring some of the works produced.

 

Eligibility

· The contest is open to all public, private and home school students in grades K-12. (2007-2008 school year.)

· One entry per student allowed.

· Artwork should be hand-delivered to the Pendleton Center for the Arts, 214 N. Main St., on Saturday, August 9, 2008 between 9 am and 4 pm. Arrangements for other times may be made prior to August 9 by contacting the Center at 278-9201. No shipped or mailed artworks can be accepted.

· Art must remain at Center until show is completed.

 

Awards

· Awards will be presented in the following categories for each grade category

Painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic)

Drawing (pencil, charcoal, pastel, ink, crayon, etc)

Photography (black and white, color)

Ceramic

Textile, Mixed Media

Poetry, Prose

· Grade categories

K-3

4-5

6-8

9-12

· 1st ($75), 2nd ($50) and 3rd ($25) place will be awarded for each grade category with at least 5 entries. When there are fewer than 5 entries, prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the judge.

· One $200 People’s Choice Award will be presented based on votes of visitors to the exhibit.

· All entrants will be judged prior to the exhibit opening on August 15th.

· The winners will have their art photographed and featured in a book that will be available for sale to the public.

·  All participants receive a Certificate of Participation for their entries and artwork will be shown on the Art Center’s website: www.pendletonarts.org

 

Artwork

· Artwork must be inspired by some aspect of the Umatilla River and may include flora, fauna, hydrology/geology, Native American culture, and/or local history. All art styles are welcome: Realism, Abstract, Impressionist, Futurism, etc. To learn more about the Umatilla River, entrants can pick up an Everyone’s River-Everyone’s Art DVD at the Center.

· Fauna – wildlife and organisms such as: mammals, birds, amphibians, fish, reptiles, insects, etc. The animals represented in the artwork must be native to the area.

· Flora – plant life and organisms such as: wildflowers, berries, trees, shrubs, leaves ferns or fungus native to the area.           

· Hydrology - the movement and distribution of water both above and below ground.

· Geology – rocks, soil and their structure

 ·  Media: Your choice. Pencil, ink, acrylic, oil, charcoal, pastel, crayon, watercolor, photo, collage, clay, or written prose/poetry. You may mix media. Please note: Charcoal and pastels must be sprayed to prevent smearing.

·  All entries must be original work.

·  Size: Artwork may not exceed 17 inches in any direction.

· Entry Identification: Each entry must have the Everyone’s River – Everyone’s Art Contest Entry Form taped to the back of the artwork.

· Artists’ mark, name, initials and/or signature must not appear on the front of the artwork.

·  Entries should not be framed and any matting must not extend more than two inches beyond maximum size limit.

·  Entrants are responsible for picking up their artwork after the contest is over. The official pick up day is Saturday, August 30, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.  Any pieces left at the Center after September 20th will be dealt with at the Center’s discretion.

 

Criteria for judging are:

1. How well the artwork illustrates the theme Everyone’s River- Everyone’s Art,

2. How aesthetically pleasing the artwork is, and

3. How suitable the artwork is for display.

 

Event Dates

April 1: Beginning of free classes and workshops at Arts Center

August 9:  Drop-Off day for entrants

August 15: Judging of entrants and opening of exhibit

August 29: Exhibition closes

August 30: Pick up artwork

September 20: Deadline for picking up artwork

November 2008: Everyone’s River-Everyone’s Art book available for purchase
